  • What are the texts I can read as background preparation for optional tasks in Paper 2 (Writing) of the FCE and CPE exams?

    One or more of the following texts may be chosen for exams in:

2010 and 2011

FCE:
Wilkie Collins , The Woman in White (Black Cat or any edition)
Michael Crichton, Jurassic Park (Macmillan or any edition)

The texts are Graded Readers which have been adapted to the FCE level.  Other editions of these books may be available.  However, teachers and candidates should be aware that the language level in other editions may be less accessible.

CAE:
John Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men
Donna Leon, Through a Glass, Darkly

CPE:
Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard, Shakespeare in Love: A Screenplay (1998)
° Teachers may choose to prepare candidates for questions on this set text by studying the film as well as, or instead of, the screenplay.

Philip K. Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (1968)
° The film Blade Runner (1982), directed by Ridley Scott is based on this novel, but is very different from the original text and should not be studied instead of the novel as preparation for questions in CPE Paper 2.
